Abortion Frees Men and Traps Women

In today’s Townhall.com Commentary email, Albert Mohler brings up a powerful point about abortion that many women simply miss. Supporters of abortion intended for its legalized practice to liberate or free women, but it has actually trapped women. Instead, men have been freed from responsibility to marry and support children. Since I can’t find the full text online to link to, I’m providing the entire (but still brief) article below:

What Women Miss on Abortion
—Albert Mohler

One of the most insidious aspects of the abortion controversy has been the success of the feminist movement in presenting abortion on demand as a matter central to the liberation of women. As far back as the ’70s, at least some feminists saw through this logic, but not nearly enough.

Richard Stith now argues that the legalization of abortion “was supposed to grant enormous freedom to women, but it has had the perverse result of freeing men and trapping women.”

He continues: “Prior to the legalization of abortion in the United States, it was commonly understood that a man should offer a woman marriage in case of pregnancy, and many did so. Though with the legalization of abortion, men started to feel that they were not responsible for the birth of children and consequently not under any obligation to marry. In gaining the option of abortion, many women have lost the option of marriage.”

Why do so many women miss this truth?

Beauty and Brains

Tom McFeely of the National Catholic Register blogged about supermodel Kathy Ireland’s changed view from pro-choice to pro-life. Citing a recent interview on Mike Huckabee’s television show, McFeely quotes Ireland as saying:

From the moment of conception a new life comes into being, the DNA, the genetic blueprint is there, the sex is determined, the blood type is determined, the unique set of fingerprints is there. …

The bottom line is, I really believe if the unborn is not a human being, have as many abortions as you want, whenever you want, no justification is necessary. If on the other hand, the unborn is a human being, no justification is adequate unless another human life is at risk, that being the mother’s. …We need to put this in the hands of science. Even if you don’t share our faith, an atheist can know it’s wrong to take an innocent human life.

Ireland’s switch from pro-abortion to pro-life may have been prompted from the medical insight she got from her physician husband.

It appears that Miss USA runner-up Carrie Prejean isn’t alone in her stance for life in the modeling world.

NBC Won’t Air Pro-Life Super Bowl Ad

According to an article in today’s National Catholic Register, “NBC has refused to air CatholicVote.org’s new pro-life ad during its broadcast of this Sunday’s Super Bowl game.” You can view the ad here:

This is a positive and uplifting message. And it is tastefully done, without shocking photos or even use of the word “abortion.”

According to the article, an “NBC representative in Chicago told CatholicVote.org late yesterday that NBC and the NFL are not interested in advertisements involving ‘political candidates or issues.’”

Latest Medical Breakthrough Further Validates Pro-Life Support for Adult Stem Cell Research Says Dr. Alveda King

Priests for Life issued the following press release today…

Latest Medical Breakthrough Further Validates Pro-Life Support for Adult Stem Cell Research Says Dr. Alveda King

November 24, 2008

Atlanta, GA – Dr. Alveda King, Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said today that reports on the successful transplant of a windpipe grown from a patient’s own stem cells demonstrate the need for public and, perhaps, media education on stem cell research.

“It’s striking to me that almost every time I read about a new medical breakthrough using stem cells, I have to search well into the story before there’s mention that the stem cells were derived from adult humans or umbilical cords, not embryos,” said Dr. King. “Based on the news coverage of stem cell research I’ve read, it’s no surprise that the public, including some news reporters, are confused about stem cell experimentation.”

“Stem cell research using cells taken from adults or umbilical cords has resulted in over 70 successful medical treatments, the latest being an organ transplant,” added Dr. King. “Years of stem cell research using techniques that kill embryonic humans have led to nothing but dead ends because of tissue rejection and tumor growth. Absolutely all of the medical breakthroughs in stem cell research have come from using cells derived from sources other than human embryos. How many people know this? Further, how many people know that the pro-life movement has always endorsed this type of non-deadly stem cell research?”

“I respectfully call on the news media to accurately and truthfully distinguish between adult/umbilical stem cell research and embryonic stem cell experiments,” concluded Dr. King. “I also hope that the media will make clear that the pro-life movement enthusiastically supports stem cell research that does no harm to anyone, research that continues to blaze a path of new cures and treatments almost daily.”
